Two Ways to Do Dental Extractions

Tooth removal occurs in one of two ways depending on the position of the infected, damaged, or problematic tooth.

Simple Extraction

Simple Dental Extraction

A general dentist can remove visible teeth that have no complications. You will get a local anesthetic to numb the area. You will feel pressure but no pain. The dentist uses what is called an elevator to lift the tooth up and then forceps to grasp and extract it. A simple dental extraction can be done in as little as 10 minutes.

Surgical Extractions

Surgical Dental Extractions

Complicated tooth extractions, like an impacted or severely damaged tooth, require an oral surgeon to remove them. You will get a local anesthetic to numb the area but some may want sedation. Surgery takes longer than a simple dental extraction but many can be done in under an hour.

Tooth Extraction Surgery

Dental Extraction Surgery: Step by Step

The oral surgeon will ask you whether you want sedation or just a local anesthetic. Sedation isn’t required but is available as nitrous oxide, orally, with an IV, or with general anesthesia. Sedation will require someone to drive you home.
Discuss with your surgeon whether you need a bone graft. They are an additional cost but can easily be inserted after the tooth extraction. This helps bone growth for those considering implants.
The surgeon may take your blood pressure and monitor your oxygen level. This is standard for those under sedation.
You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area.
The surgeon will cut into the gum tissue to expose the infected, damaged, or problematic tooth.
The surgeon may need to remove some surrounding bone to extract the tooth. This is where the bone graft would be inserted.
A damaged tooth sometimes must be removed in sections. This procedure involves cutting a tooth into smaller sections and removing them individually rather than the whole tooth.
The oral surgeon will stitch your gum. They may use biodegradable string, which means you will not need to come back for stitches removal or they may use standard string. That requires a follow-up visit to remove it.
You will be given gauze and told to bite down on it for 45 minutes to start blood clotting. Your surgeon will likely give you an antibiotic to take for a few days and important aftercare instructions including what foods to avoid, avoiding straws, and limiting some physical activities to avoid dislodging the blood clot.
Tooth Extraction Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Most people will see or feel wisdom teeth erupting between 18 and 30 years old. While these “third molars” aren’t required to be pulled, they can present problems like tooth overcrowding and infection. It is advised to get dental extractions to remove them before they cause problems. Impacted wisdom teeth must be removed.

Tooth Extraction For Dental Implants

Dental Implants Replace Tooth Extractions

Dental extractions don’t need to leave your mouth with gaps. Discuss the option of dental implants with your dentist or surgeon. Dental implants are superior to other options because they are permanent, comfortable, and durable. They look like your natural teeth. Tooth Extraction Toronto FAQ’s

Can you suggest some sources on tooth extractions for further readings?

Yes, you can check out some of the following sources:  News Medical, Animated-Teeth, Tooth IQ and Healthline. Contact us if you have any questions about tooth extraction services, and one of our experienced dentists answer all of your questions and address any of your concerns.

Why would I need a tooth extracted?

There are many reasons a patient may require tooth extraction. Perhaps, your tooth is poorly positioned in your mouth, has developed an abscess, become badly decayed, or you have developed periodontal disease.

Will I experience pain during my tooth extraction?

No, due to our sleep dentistry services, our tooth extraction procedures are painless. Depending on whether the extraction is simple or surgical, you will be placed under the appropriate level of anesthesia. If you experience any discomfort during the extraction procedure, our attentive dental team will make you feel comfortable.

When will I be able to eat and drink normally again?

For two to three days after your tooth extraction, you should eat only soft foods like soup, oatmeal, mashed potatoes and pasta. You can slowly add solid foods back into your diet after three days.

How should I care for my mouth after the extraction?

When you’re recovering from tooth extraction, you should take either the medication prescribed by the oral surgeon or over-the-counter painkillers to ease pain, apply an ice pack to your cheek to alleviate swelling, rest for 24 hours following the procedure, rinse your mouth out with warm water and salt, and brush and floss your teeth avoiding the extraction site.
